Recycling can help reduce the impact of packaging, but it will not solve it. What then, can we do to help?
Responsibly sourced, renewable raw plant-based resources can be used for the future of sustainable packaging. Tetra Pak understands this goal, by utilizing cartons for their all their packaging needs. The founder of Tetra Pak, Ruben Rausing, even expressed his goal, stating
"A package should save more than it costs."
Through utilizing paper-based products, and enforcing a circular business model, Tetra Pak takes the extra steps required to see real change.
Employing Real Goals
Not only is Tetra Pak changing their materials, the way that they are sourced and constantly reassessing how they can do better - they are making their goals public. Tetra Pak's ambition is to help put recycled materials to good use – promoting the circularity of their packaging and eliminating unnecessary waste. They are doing so by introducing the use of attributed recycled polymers in their packaging and thereby ensuring at least 10% recycled plastic content in their beverage cartons are sold in Europe by 2025.
Their efforts toward a fully recyclable carton are as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4.
Increase the share of renewable materials, removing layers of fossil-based plastic and/or replacing them with plant-based alternatives.
Use recycled polymers and paper in all our packaging materials, while never compromising food safety.
Develop innovative openings that address litter, such as paper straws, non-detachable alternatives, biodegradable straws and tethered caps. In 2019, we became the first carton packaging company to launch paper straws in Europe. We also quintupled our investment in converting all plastic straws to paper in the longer term.
Enhance recycling through packaging design.
