Notpla is innovating package design, one Ooho at a time. How you ask? By utilizing one of the most abundant sources of biomass on the planet: seaweed.

Short for "Not Plastic," Notpla is changing the package design industry by bringing a new material into the mix. The Ooho is the latest liquid container, edible or biodegradable in nature in just 4-6 weeks, without the need for industrial composting or special conditions. Made out of seaweed, the benefits of this material have yet to be utilized.

“Seaweed is one of the planet’s most abundant sources of biomass (growing at a rate up to 1 metre per day), its production does not compete with food crops, requires no fertiliser or fresh water to produce and actively sequesters carbon dioxide.”

Founded in 2014 by a combination of designers, chemists, engineers, and entrepreneurs, this company is dedicated to transforming sustainable packaging through its use of seaweed.

New Technology

Just as its material is original it's only right for the machinery to follow suit. This machine produces OOho sachets in the range of 15-100ml, depending on the application. Once fully tested and scaled up their business model will be to lease this machine and sell cartridges of materials to food manufacturers, co-packers and event organisers, enabling them to produce and sell Oohos containing drinks or sauces as desired.

While this machine is still in development, you can have Notpla cater your events such as how the Ooho reduced packaging excess at the 2019 London Marathon for Lucozade Sport. Check out their website to learn more.
